Over spring break, a group of students from the College of Agriculture traveled to Thessaloniki, Greece, to attend a 10-day study abroad with Perrotis College. Dr. Yifen Wang and Dr. Wilmer Pacheco traveled with the students to help share their knowledge of the agriculture industry with students and members of Perrotis College.
While in Thessaloniki, students spent time getting acquainted with the local culture through dinners at traditional Greek taverns, Greek dance lessons and tours of the city.
Students attended two tours of Thessaloniki, one focused on the vast history of the city and the other on the markets and other local Greek products.
Dr. Kiki Zinoviadou, a native Greek, gave a lecture and tasting on olive oil and how to use their senses to analyze to flavors and notes of the olive oil.
At Marianna’s Vine Leaves Enterprise students learned that there are many things you can do at a vineyard besides using the grapes to make wine. This organic family business produces and sells stuffed vine leaves, vine top pickles and many other grape products.
When at the Gerovassiliou Winery, the group toured the winery and learned about the process of making each type of wine. After seeing the facilities and the museum, there was a wine tasting of three of their most well-known products.
The American Farm School has an extensive alumni network and one of them is the owner of Mpekas Buffalo Enterprise. Here they make many products from many types of milk, one of the most intriguing being buffalo.
In Meteroa, there are six active monasteries that are home to a small number of monks and nuns. Students were able to tour two of the monasteries and experience a glimpse of life on the giant rock faces.
The last day of the trip students participated in a truffle hunting activity where they met up with a truffle hunting dog named Billy and his handlers to look for truffles in the countryside of Greece. Afterward a mushroom pasta was prepared for the student’s farewell picnic that included the truffles they found
