Stanley P. Wilson Beef Teaching Unit & Lambert-Powell Meats Laboratory

By: Sarah Howard

The Stanley P. Wilson Beef Teaching Unit was built in the early 2000s to serve as a teaching laboratory for several animal sciences courses focusing on beef cattle teaching, research and extension associated with Auburn University.

This modern working facility provides students opportunities to gain hands-on practical experience with proper instruction. The Beef Teaching Unit includes two animal metabolism rooms and a preparatory lab for beef cattle research projects. It also includes a modern classroom and a conference room for smaller group meetings. There are two outside working chutes (both manual and hydraulic), cattle holding pens and show ring.

The Lambert- Powell Meats Laboratory is also attached to the Beef Teaching Unit for a separate learning facility and to focus on raising and harvesting cattle on the same property.

The Beef Teaching Unit cow herd consists predominantly of Registered Angus, Beefmaster, and Charolais cattle. Artificial insemination is used in the fall in the purebred operation for 40 days and then bulls are turned out for 35 days to maintain a 75-day calving season. The spring calving group has bulls turned out for 60 days to produce crossbred calves and increase heterosis within the cowherd. Heterosis is the superior genetics that result from crossbreeding animals.

The cattle are maintained on 100 acres on campus and 90 acres north of Auburn, which consist of various grasses such as bermuda and fescue grasses. The pastures are reseeded in the fall with ryegrass for winter forage. The pastures vary in size and are grazed on a rotational basis.

The Beef Unit is maintained by Whitney Blackburn and working students. The beef production class also helps assist with calving out the cowherd and maintaining health programs.

This facility also supports state and local extension programs targeting youth and adults interested in the beef cattle industry. It is the site for many 4-H and FFA activities, such as Block & Bridle, Livestock Judging Contest, and Alpha Gamma Rho Livestock Show. It also supports the animal sciences program and other agricultural research within Auburn University.
