3 Clubs to Get Involved with in the College of Agriculture

The Agribusiness Club

The Agribusiness Club at Auburn University is a great way to get involved on campus. Some may ask, what is agribusiness? Agribusiness is agriculture conducted on commercial principles, especially using advanced technology and the group of industries dealing with agricultural produce and services required in farming. The club is a great way to boost your resume, learn valuable skills, and create long-lasting friendships with people with similar future plans throughout agriculture.

The club is very active and has many fun field trips, educational speakers and fundraisers to help support local philanthropies in the Auburn area. Some may think the club is all business and no fun, but that is not true. Its most recent educational field trip was to the Blue Ribbon Dairy Farm. At the farm, the members learned many valuable aspects to dairy farming and had homemade ice cream from the farm itself. They also were even able to taste the milk that the dairy cows produced.

Event planner Gracen Bridges, was extremely excited to plan the club’s last field trip and is eager to start on next semester's educational field trips.

“This past summer, my family and I visited Blue Ribbon Dairy to feed the cows and watch them get milked. When I found out I got the event chair position for the Agribusiness Club, I immediately knew that I wanted to take the club to the farm,” Bridges said.

“The farm is a family owned, fourth-generation farm, and the owner was super nice and explained all the details to the club,” Bridges continued. “Being the event chair for the Agribusiness Club has been beneficial to me and to the club as a whole. I love being involved in a club that is directly related to my major and meeting many others in the same major as well. In the spring, I am planning to take the club to a local hydroponics farm in Auburn.”

The club meets every third Tuesday of each month during the fall and spring semesters along with field trips. It is a very affordable club with dues being $20, due at the first meeting in the fall. It is a great way to become aware of the many different job career paths that are available throughout agriculture.

Ag Ambassadors

Another amazing club to become involved in throughout the College of Ag is the Ag Ambassadors. This is a prestigious club of which only a select few elite students get the opportunity to become a part of.

The ambassadors give tours throughout the College of Ag to students who are interested in coming to Auburn and exploring a major within agriculture. These students are also a huge help to improve student, alumni and faculty relations.

"Being able to serve as an Ag Ambassadors for the past two years has allowed me to take my professional development and passion to the next level,” said Bethanie Hartzog, a senior in Agricultural Communications.

“As an Agricultural Communications major, I have always loved to talk with people about agriculture and its impact on the world, Hartzog said. “Being able to show students the endless possibilities within the agricultural industry and help them apply to the College of Agriculture has become a passion of mine. I would highly recommend this club to any College of Ag student who is passionate about sharing their Auburn Ag story and not afraid of a little hard work.”

The Ag Ambassadors is an excellent club for any College of Ag major to explore and learn more about the majors and opportunities across the different departments. To apply to become an Ag Ambassador, come to the interest meetings in Comer 207 on Dec. 6 and 8 to learn more and get your application.

AU Collegiate Cattlemen and Cattlewomen Association

A third beneficial club to join is the AU Cattlemen and Cattlewomen’s Association. The main goal for this organization is to promote beef and studies of animal science throughout the community. The club is full of young men and women who are excited to be involved in the community, promote youth activities, and even work closely with the Alabama Cattlemen and Alabama Cattlewomen’s Associations throughout the state. It has recently become the collegiate chapter for those organizations.

Throughout the Collegiate Cattlemen and Cattlewomen’s Association, there is never a dull moment with this club on campus. With attending farm tours, catering, Ag Roundup, Ag Discovery, attending National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Conventions annually, Alabama Cattlemen’s Association Convention and the Reciprocal Meat Conference, this club is always busy.

“I love Cattlemen’s because it is a great community of super great people,” said member Corley Williams. “The meetings are always beneficial because of the unique speakers who come to teach us about industry. The farm tours are also super fun and overall it’s just a great way to network with people. I’ll probably be working within my career in a fun way!”

The club meets every second and fourth Tuesday at Lowder Barn at Ag Heritage Park at 6 p.m. This is a great way to jump out of comfort zones and meet new people who are all striving to be successful in careers after college. With dues being only $50, covering state and county chapter dues, monthly magazine subscription, and even a club t-shirt, this is a great, easy, affordable way to become active on campus at Auburn University.
