E.W. Shell Fisheries Center

By: Bethanie Hartzog

Research, education and outreach are the three pillars that the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center was founded. This research facility focuses on aquaculture, fisheries management and aquatic sciences. With 1600 acres of infrastructure and natural habitats, the fisheries center is well-equipped for research in various areas.

The research in this facility takes place in the numerous ponds located on the property or the laboratory spaces on-site. The research covers a wide range of aquatic species, including, but not limited to, catfish, tilapia, largemouth bass, crayfish, and mussels. Still, they also expand their research to waterways throughout Alabama and the Southeastern U.S.

The facility is used as an educational space for Auburn University classes from the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences; School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences; School of Industrial and Graphic Design; Department of Biosystems Engineering; and Department of Biological Sciences.

As for outreach, the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences students manage a fish market out of the center every Saturday. The fisheries center also offers demonstrations for schools, industry partners, legislators, and the general public. The Fisheries Center hosts a Fisheries Expo and Field Day annually for students and Auburn community members to learn more about Alabama’s aquatic resources.
